Zack Steffen is heading back to MLS. The Pennsylvania born keeper failed to secure a regular place with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and spent the 2022-23 season on loan at second tier Middlesbrough in the Championship.

Steffen will return to the MLS to sign with Colorado Rapids after both clubs reached an agreement with the player penning a three-year-deal.

The 28-year-old stopper joined Manchester City in 2019 from Columbus Crew, but his time in the north of England saw him lodged behind no. 1 goalkeeping choice Ederson with Steffen spending the bulk of his time on the bench.

With the Citizens, Steffen played only 21 games in the almost 5 years and saw more first team action in his two loan spells with German side Fortuna Dusseldorf and Championship outfit Middlesbrough.

Steffen will return to the MLS hoping to reach the standards that saw him named as goalkeeper of the year before his European adventure. His objective at international will be to curry favour with USMNT boss Gregg Berhalter with the keeper missing out on a place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar due to a lack of regular first team football.
